Alternative therapies
People use many techniques to help deal with the pain and challenges of childhood abuse. These techniques are based on different theories of life, the world and the psyche. ‘Alternative therapies’
refers to choices other than the commonly accepted and officially recognised interventions which mainstream practitioners utilise.
When feelings of confusion, self-doubt, fear and anxiety overwhelm you, it can be difficult to decide which ‘treatments’ to try. Conventional medicinal and talk-based therapies do not always provide all the answers you need, but they are a good starting point, and are backed by professional and ethical standards of practice and practitioner registration. Seeking ‘alternatives’ does not mean that you need to stop conventional therapy. However, it is best to tell your practitioner what other approaches or treatments you are using.
