2011 Winner of ASCA’s Untangle the knot competition
David Patston - Matryoshka's Shell

"My starting point for “Matryoshka's Shell” was the notion that the emotional or psychological knots that bind us are usually hidden.
I thought that opening up a Matryoshka doll to reveal course, knotted nylon rope snaking over the second doll was an apt metaphor revealing that, just below the outer layer, our tangled knots can be exposed.
And to realise it into a personal context, I chose to bring the visual element of reflection to the image.
For me it implies an adult’s view back to childhood. Fond hazy memories of the kind of patterned wallpaper that seem to have covered every wall in every room from my childhood represent an uncluttered, simple place against which to contrast.
By drawing sharp focus on my subject in such a fuzzy warm place, I hope to suggest that once the hidden knots are clearly seen and identified, it might be possible to untangling them."
2011 Runner Up
Frances W Yip - Tie the Decay

"This photograph was taken with a thick rope binding a decayed orange.
The background represents the victim living in trauma and in constant isolation.
The moulded surface symbolises the shadow of the subject’s painful and scarring childhood.
The only way to be recovered is to seek help and support."
