ASCA – Convention on the Rights of the Child

In June this year ASCA lodged a submission to the Human Rights Commission Consultation in support of Australia’s first human rights charter. ASCA’s submission, co-authored by Dr. Jennifer Wilson from the Centre for Peace and Social Justice and Dr. Cathy Kezelman, ASCA chairperson, is based on Article 19 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

ASCA’s submission asserts that the rights of the child to live free from abuse and child sexual assault perpetrated by those responsible for that child’s care, that is, non-state actors (primary care-givers), are not sufficiently promoted and protected in Australia. The submission further asserts that the human right of the child to support, protection, treatment and follow-up after abuse and child sexual assault is also not sufficiently promoted and protected in Australia. Evidence also suggests that adult survivors of abuse frequently encounter further abuses of their human rights as described in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Convention on the Elimination of Violence against Women and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
