Creating New Possibilities - Workshops for Survivors

ASCA has developed a set of 4 psycho-educational workshops for adult survivors of all forms of child abuse and neglect, male and female, and their supporters. We have called them Creating New Possibilities workshops. These workshops are free with the option of providing a donation at attendance.

They provide information about how the abuse suffered may have impacted current or past behaviours, feelings and/or physical and psychological health. Workshops on safety, building effective coping strategies, the importance of support and re-visiting one’s story, as well as the various stages of the healing process are included in this set.

While it is possible to attend workshops individually or in combination, there is additional benefit from attending the full set. In 2009 we delivered Workshop 1 (Finding the Support You Need) and 2 (Coping with Childhood Abuse) in 18 different sites around Australia. A schedule for the second half of 2010 which include Workshop 3 (Building adaptive coping strategies) has now been announced.  ASCA continues to seek funding so that it will be able to deliver all four workshops more widely.

Creating New Possibilities workshops are open to all adult survivors of child abuse and their supporters - including ASCA members AND non-members. These workshops are not, however, designed for health care professionals (for whom Best Practice workshops are available - see below).

To register for your chosen workshop online click the appropriate link in the text above or click on "Workshop schedule" on the side menu and make your selection.

Courses for Health Care Professionals

Best Practice – 1 day workshops for health professionals

ASCA runs workshops for health care professionals. Working with survivors of childhood abuse requires specialised training and often is challenging. Even though knowledge about the understanding of the biological and interpersonal consequences of childhood trauma has exploded over the past two decades, many training and treatment programs have not yet integrated the new information. Our mental health training, in psychiatry, psychology, medicine, social work, counselling, nursing or other human services disciplines may not have prepared us to work effectively with survivors of childhood abuse.

ASCA's schedule, with courses announced in capital cities across Australia is now available. Professsional development endorsement APS 7 general points plus 7 optional. AASW 14 points. ACA in process.

For further information on, and to register for, the Best Practice 1 day course, click here.   All enquiries and expressions of interest please call 1300 657 380 or email manager1300@asca.org.au.

ASCA workshops for health workers and health care professionals – tailored to your needs!

Should your organisation be seeking training and/or professional development for working with adult survivors of child abuse ASCA workshops are now available in-house on request. These workshops can be tailored to your needs.

While workshops are generally one day in duration, 2-day as well as half day workshops can be arranged.

These in-house workshops incorporate up-to-date information while providing best practice guidelines for working with adults surviving child abuse.

An ASCA in-house workshop provides many benefits as your team can request the topics which interest you and use the time to focus on the issues pertinent to your clients and practice. Thus bringing greater clarity to better meets your needs.

Workshops cover topics such as:

  • Understanding abuse and its impacts
  • Coping strategies and defence mechanisms used by survivors of child abuse
  • Common impacts of child abuse
  • Pathways through which adult health can be compromised
  • Treatment models and best practice guidelines for working with adults surviving child abuse
  • Reflective practice and vicarious traumatisation
  • Application exercises

For more information on ASCA’s in-house health professionals’ workshops please contact: Susan Leith-Miller on 02 8920 3611 or susan@asca.org.au.
