Blue Knot Foundation helps you meet your reporting obligations by having clearly articulated learning outcomes attached to each workshop and issuing Certificates of Attendance to participants upon completion of the workshop. Trauma-Informed Care and Practice in the Homelessness Sector

This one day interactive training provides the information and skills needed by personnel working with people with in the homelessness sector to better assist the large numbers of clients impacted also by diverse traumas.

People who experience homelessness experience high levels of diverse past and present traumas. Many trauma survivors use diverse services at higher rates than the general population; this is compounded for people experiencing homelessness. It is essential to the emotional and physical support as well as the well-being of survivors who are experiencing homelessness that systems’ and individual practice is informed by the ground-breaking research related to Trauma-informed Practice.

This training will delineate the prevalence, dynamics, impacts of, coping strategies related to traumatic stress and workshop the principles of trauma-informed practice using diverse case scenarios.

It also provides participants with insights and tools to take back to the workplace to enhance client outcomes and minimise the risks of re-traumatisation. 

At the session’s completion participants will be better able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the definition, types and distinguishing features of trauma
  • Demonstrate knowledge about homelessness, its relationship to trauma including prevalence
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some of the impacts of trauma on the mind and body, the many emotional and behavioural difficulties as ‘adaptive’ responses to trauma and the neurobiological underpinnings
  • Demonstrate knowledge of parallel processes of original trauma and non-trauma informed practice
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of trauma informed practice
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the 5 principle framework for utilizing trauma-informed practice for organisations and in individual practice and have the opportunity to do an organizational/personal practice audit
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ‘window of tolerance’ for clients as a basis for working with affect dysregulation and hyper/hypo-arousal
  • Experience the opportunity for experiential learning in trauma- informed practice with individuals and families experiencing homelessness

Material presented in the training will be comprehensive, and will draw on the research based on the Blue Knot Foundation's Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Complex Trauma and Trauma Informed Care and Service Delivery www.blueknot.org.au/guidelines
