Having recently qualified as a social worker in the UK, I wanted to take the opportunity to volunteer with a non-profit organisation while living in Sydney. After reaching out to ASCA, I was thoroughly informed about how I could be involved with the team.

On my first day with ASCA I was given an induction and information regarding the background of the charity, which was not only interesting but also prepared me for my volunteering experience. Due to confidentiality, I was limited as to what type of work I could be involved in, however I was able to see how the team worked and the feedback from the training sessions they facilitate. I was also given the opportunity to be involved with trauma informed training, which was an excellent experience and has given me skills for the future following my return to the UK.

This experience has opened my eyes as to how non-profit organisations work and I was able to see the fantastic work that ASCA does. The team was welcoming and supportive, while giving me the choice as to when and what work I could do. I would fully recommend any individual to volunteer with ASCA and be part of such an amazing team.

Rowan Forster imageI first found out about ASCA when I was a student looking to fulfill an experiential placement component of my degree. My expectations were of drudgery and office-work monotony. My expectations were stunned, and as my placement hours were all too rapidly drawing to an end I made a decision. My time at ASCA was so well spent, so pleasantly rewarding, so enriching, that I had to return and volunteer my time once again.

The work that ASCA does is amazing and so very important to so many lives. I am nothing short of proud to be a small part of it. However, while a sense of achievement is a great incentive it is not the primary reason I choose to spend a day each week at ASCA. I do so because it is fun. And not just fun compared to other, run-of-the-mill volunteer work, but actually, undeniably, indisputably enjoyable. For the personally driven there is so much to be learnt, both by engaging with the marvellous team and through the training that ASCA puts on offer. Better still, themed lunches, celebratory morning-teas, and the hilarity of such events as bring-your-puppy-to-work day are just some of the fun events I’ve seen in my short time at ASCA. Then there is the excitement of Blue-Knot day! Manning a market cup-cake stall to raise funds for ASCA’s continued work, and playing photographer for a day was without any doubt a joyous highlight of it all.

In short, I have gained invaluable knowledge and experience. I am able to see the product of my contributions, big and small, giving me a deep sense of achievement and pride. I am surrounded by supportive and admirable people, all sporting a fantastic sense of humour. And I have enjoyed every step of it. Volunteering for ASCA has been an experience I will always remember, and never regret.

      Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Blue Knot Foundation and supporting the 5 million Australian adult survivors of childhood trauma and abuse.

We have ongoing volunteer opportunities in our Sydney-based office to assist in research, data input and general administration.

If you are not Sydney-based, unfortunately we do not offer many opportunities via distance, unless it is in a specialised area of need, such as graphic design.

We are also unable to offer clinical placements or volunteer opportunities on our Blue Knot Helpline, as it is staffed by trained trauma-informed counsellors.

Provided the above, if you are still interested in becoming a volunteer at Blue Knot Foundation, please complete the form below. You may also wish to consider fundraising for Blue Knot Foundation or holding a Blue Knot Day event.
